On the move

A couple days ago I was playing with Baxter on the floor and decided to get a video of him doing his "inchworm" thing in an attempt to crawl.  Here's that video:

While I was busy typing out all the little details of the video on my iPhone to send to YouTube, Baxter crawled about seven feet.  I only realized it after I looked up from my phone and saw that he was far away from me with a big smile on his face.

It was such a big milestone for him that I got overwhelmed with emotion and started to cry.  Here he was, my little baby boy, crawling already.  What happened to the little preemie who used to be so dependent on us?  I remember having to keep the temperature in the house warmer than we'd like to help regulate his temperature better.  I remember having to closely monitor how much he was taking in to make sure he was eating well to gain weight.  Now he's scooting away from us at any chance he gets and cramming fistfuls of puffs in his mouth, always ready and willing to give you a slobbery "mmmmwah" on the cheek (or nose).

This little guy amazes me everyday.  I love seeing the thrill of discovery in his face whenever he experiences something new and exciting to him.  It truly is a blessing to be a parent.

7 Months Old

Oh boy, are we tired these days.  Baxter is more vocal, more mobile, and more work!  We had to take his picture in the jumparoo because there was no way he'd sit still.

He's eating more solid food and is learning how to self-feed.  He loves his little puffs and tries to cram three of them in his mouth at a time, with two of them getting stuck to his chubby hand and melting all over the place.  Mealtimes can be quite messy these days.

None of his teeth have erupted yet, but apparently he's not the only one in the family teething.  I think one of my wisdom teeth is trying to make it's grand entrance, and it's been causing me pain and misery for the past few days.  I can't open my mouth all the way or chew on the left side of my mouth.  Maybe it's a good time to diet.

I can't wait until Baxter's teeth come out, then maybe he'll stop putting everything in his mouth.  Nothing is safe from being crammed into his mouth, not even Lola.

Bax enjoys walking around the house with us.  It's fun to let him take the lead and see what things interest him.  He likes walking to the laundry room and walking around outside so he can grab fistfuls of grass.  Unfortunately we are in the middle of June-uary here in Washington so we haven't had the chance to get outside much.  I'm at the point now with Washington weather that I don't even know why I bother buying sunscreen anymore since I never get a chance to use it.

Our little guy sits up pretty well by himself and is starting to figure out how to crawl.  He can lift his butt up in the air but hasn't started to coordinate his arms and legs yet, so the resulting action is that of a lazy inchworm that only moves one step.  When that doesn't work out well enough for him, he'll resort to fussing.

Sleeping is another issue.  He is a master at fighting sleep and resorts to anything -- poking his eyes, pulling his hair, pooping, scratching, babbling nonstop, and screaming like a madman -- to keep himself awake.  Once he finally lulls off to sleep he does pretty well throughout the night, but will usually wake up in the early morning because he's peed through his clothes.  We'll find the poor kid trying to stay on his side so he's not laying on his wet back.  After a change of clothes and a new diaper, we'll usually take him into our bed and try to catch up on some zzzzz's.

It's hard to believe how much our little preemie has grown.  We can't seem to keep up with all his clothes anymore.  The pile in our bedroom of his outgrown clothes has turned into two boxes with a huge pile on top of it.  I really need to sort through them and bring some to local consignment shops.  It seems like he only gets two or three uses out of an outfit before it starts to fit him like a sausage casing.  At least his hats still fit him for a while.

I hope the sun comes out soon so we can take Baxter out for more walks.  He likes it when we stroll him around and let him play with plants and animals.  He's become somewhat of a terrorist to poor Buttons, the 16-year old family dog at my parents' house.  Bax has poked Buttons in the eye, put a death grab to his ear, and tries to hug him whenever he gets close.  Be warned, small animals of Gig Harbor -- Bax will soon be on the loose!
